DePuy Orthopaedics is a branch of Johnson & Johnson whose specialty is orthopedic devices. Recently, the company was accused of knowingly supplying defective hip replacements resulting in severe injuries to some of the patients who had the devices implanted. As a result, Johnson & Johnson has been ordered to pay millions of dollars to those individuals who suffered from their defective product.
The hip replacements are said to have a high failure rate due to the defective design. The joint of the hip is known as a ball and socket joint. In the defective design, both the ball and socket (where the ball inserts) are made of metal. Since they are metal on metal, when they rub together they create metal debris. This may lead to several complications, namely metallosis. Metallosis, also known as metal poisoning occurs when the body has a toxic amount of metal in the body. Metal poisoning can cause the breakdown of bones, tissues, muscles, and may also cause organ damage. As of now, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration hasn’t issued a recall.
If you currently have a DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement, it’s best to be aware of the symptoms you may experience if the device is failing. The following are some of the signs and symptoms of implant failure:
- Trouble standing and/or walking
- Pain when standing and/or walking
- Unexplained hip pain
- Pain at the site
