Various circumstances may cause blood clots in the lower extremities. The blood clots can break loose and travel to the lungs also known as a pulmonary embolism. Typically blood clots are treated with anticoagulants, however, when anticoagulation therapy isn’t effective, an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter may be indicated.
An inferior vena cava filter is a small metal implantation device designed to stop blood clots from traveling to the lungs. Unfortunately, there have been problems with the devices migrating or perforating. Cook Group, Inc., one of the leading manufacturers for IVC filters, has faced more than 100 lawsuits due to their defective IVC filters. C.R. Bard, another leading manufacturer is also dealing with lawsuits for several of their products including IVC filters.
In 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reported that they received more than 100 adverse effects reports pertaining to IVC filters. The adverse effect reports included migration of the filter, perforation, filter fractures, and detachment of device components. As a result of the reports, the FDA recommended the doctors who are responsible for the care of individuals who have had retrievable IVC filters implanted should have the filter removed as soon as a pulmonary embolism is no longer a risk. As of now, an IVC filter recall has not been issued.
If you currently have an IVC filter, it is important to know the signs and symptoms of problems related to the filter. The following are some of the signs and symptoms of IVC filter complications:
- Chest pain
- Low blood pressure
- Palpitations
- Confusion
- Shortness of breath
